OR Tambo Maintains Jet Fuel Supply Despite Natref Refinery Fire

The Airports Company South Africa (Acsa) has assured that OR Tambo International Airport (Ortia) has sufficient jet fuel reserves for January, despite a recent fire at the Natref refinery affecting national production.

Ample Fuel Reserves
Ortia currently holds 27.1 million litres of jet fuel, sufficient for about 7.6 days at a daily consumption rate of 3.6 million litres. Industry players are actively collaborating to minimize any potential disruptions in February.

Coordinated Efforts to Address Shortages
With daily consumption at 3.6 million litres, February’s requirements amount to 97.2 million litres. The refinery is expected to resume operations on 27 February 2025.

To address the shortfall, Acsa, the Fuels Industry Association of Southern Africa (Fiasa), Natref industry partners, and several government agencies are working together. These include the Central Energy Fund, Strategic Fuel Fund, Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, and state-owned entities like Transnet Pipelines and Transnet Freight Rail.

Alternative Measures in Place
Fuel distribution remains under the control of airlines and suppliers, based on their commercial agreements. To manage the situation, airlines and suppliers are exploring alternative strategies, such as refuelling at other airports.

However, some airlines have expressed concerns about fuel supply limitations, prompting them to arrange additional refuelling stops at other locations to ensure uninterrupted operations.
