Gauteng metered taxi operators say that they are pleased with Transport Minister Joe Maswanganyi’s decision to strictly enforce the law on e-hailing service taxi operators.
Maswanganyi announced on Thursday that his department would ensure taxi drivers who have partnered with app based transport services like Uber abide by the National Land Transport Act.
Metered taxi operators’ representative Oupa Sikhosana says that their drivers will assist police to make sure that Uber taxi drivers are licensed.
“So it has worked with Pretoria because they are able to say, to take those registrations and say ‘can you check these registrations, who do these registrations belong to?’ It is us that are able to identify Uber cabs.”
Sikhosana has denied allegations that metered taxi drivers intimidated and assaulted Uber drivers.
