JMPD Arrests 161 Motorists for Drunk Driving in Just One Week

More than 160 motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol during a week-long road safety operation conducted by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) across the city.

The arrests were made between 25 and 31 May 2026 during a series of roadblocks, stop-and-search operations, and vehicle checkpoints aimed at improving road safety and removing dangerous drivers from Johannesburg’s roads. The operations were conducted in Midrand, Randburg, Soweto, the Johannesburg inner city, Sandton, Lenasia, and Orange Farm.

A total of 161 motorists were arrested for drunk driving during the operation, highlighting the continued challenge of alcohol-related offences on South African roads. According to JMPD statistics, the Johannesburg inner city recorded the highest number of arrests, with 29 motorists caught driving under the influence. Soweto followed with 25 arrests, while the Sandton and Alexandra region recorded 18 arrests.

The latest figures serve as a stark reminder that despite ongoing awareness campaigns and stricter enforcement, many drivers continue to take the risk of getting behind the wheel after consuming alcohol. Law enforcement authorities have repeatedly warned that drunk driving remains one of the leading causes of serious road accidents and fatalities in South Africa.

JMPD officers conducted the operations as part of broader efforts to improve compliance with traffic laws and enhance public safety. Motorists found to be driving under the influence face arrest, criminal prosecution, possible fines, imprisonment, and the suspension of their driving licences.

The crackdown comes at a time when road safety remains a growing concern for many South Africans. Every year, alcohol-related crashes result in injuries, deaths, and high financial costs for families and communities. For many households already facing economic pressure, the consequences of a serious road accident can be devastating.

Authorities continue to encourage motorists to make responsible choices before travelling. Whether attending a social gathering, family event, or night out with friends, drivers are urged to arrange alternative transport, use e-hailing services, or designate a sober driver rather than risk their lives and the lives of others.

The JMPD has indicated that roadblocks and enforcement operations will continue across Johannesburg as part of its ongoing commitment to reducing road fatalities and improving safety for all road users. Officials have also called on residents to support law enforcement efforts by reporting reckless and dangerous driving behaviour.

With 161 drunk-driving arrests recorded in just seven days, the latest operation sends a clear message that authorities are increasing their focus on road safety and that motorists who choose to drink and drive can expect to face serious consequences.
