Toyota has refreshed the Corolla Cross, South Africa’s best-selling hybrid vehicle, to maintain its stronghold in an increasingly competitive market influenced by the rise of Chinese car brands.
A Continued Success Story
Since its local launch in 2021, the Corolla Cross has been a major success for Toyota South Africa. The vehicle has contributed significantly to the brand’s dominance in the local hybrid market, holding a remarkable 67% market share. It also leads the C-SUV segment and was the second-best-selling passenger vehicle in South Africa in 2024, with 22,000 units sold.
Exterior Enhancements
The 2025 Corolla Cross receives a refreshed exterior with a redesigned geometric bumper, updated headlamps, new badges, and a revamped rear light design. Additionally, two new colors—Oxide Bronze and Brass Gold—have been introduced. However, the GR-Sport variant remains unchanged in this update.
Trim Levels and Interior Updates
The Corolla Cross lineup continues with the same trim levels: Xi, XS, XR, and GR-Sport. Each trim offers a different interior experience, catering to a variety of customer preferences.
New technological upgrades include a 10-inch infotainment system for the XS variant and above, while higher-end models feature wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The XR and GR-Sport trims now boast a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 360-degree panoramic view monitor. Additional enhancements include an electric parking brake, USB Type-C ports, rear occupant detection, and redesigned seats.
Performance and Driving Experience
Under the hood, the Corolla Cross retains its existing powertrain options. Customers can choose between a 1.8L four-cylinder petrol engine (103 kW/173 Nm) and a 1.8L hybrid variant delivering the same output. Both options continue to be paired with a CVT transmission.
Tested under the heat of Gauteng, the hybrid model delivered an impressive fuel consumption figure of just over 4L/100km in moderate driving conditions. However, performance enthusiasts may find the Corolla Cross lacking in power, particularly when attempting swift overtakes or driving uphill. The CVT transmission tends to struggle under high-demand acceleration, leading to a less responsive experience. Nevertheless, the vehicle provides a smooth and comfortable ride suited for family-oriented driving.
