South Africans planning a holiday to Thailand will soon have less time to enjoy the country without applying for a visa. Thailand is reducing the visa-free stay for South African passport holders from 60 days to 30 days, with the new rule taking effect from 15 September 2026.
The change means South Africans travelling to popular destinations such as Bangkok, Phuket, Krabi, Chiang Mai and Koh Samui will still be able to visit Thailand without getting a visa before travelling, but the visa-free period will be half as long.
The 60-day visa exemption was introduced in 2024 as part of Thailand’s efforts to make the country more accessible to international tourists. However, Thai authorities have now revised the arrangement, reducing the maximum visa-free stay to 30 days for affected nationalities, including South Africa.
For the average South African traveller, the change is unlikely to make much difference to a typical holiday. A two- or three-week trip to Thailand will still fall comfortably within the new 30-day limit.
It could, however, affect travellers planning longer trips, particularly those combining several parts of Thailand or spending extended periods travelling through Southeast Asia.
South Africans who enter Thailand before 15 September under the existing arrangement will retain the period of stay granted to them on arrival. The new 30-day limit will apply to eligible travellers entering Thailand from 15 September.
Travellers who want to stay longer than 30 days will need to check their visa and extension options. Under the revised arrangements, eligible visitors can apply for a one-time extension of up to 30 additional days, subject to approval by Thai immigration authorities.
The change comes as Thailand reviews its visa exemption system amid concerns about misuse of visa-free entry and wider immigration and security issues.
For South Africans, the important thing to remember is that Thailand is not removing visa-free access. The country is simply cutting the standard visa-free stay from 60 days to 30 days.
Anyone booking a Thailand holiday for later this year should therefore check their planned length of stay before travelling. A holiday of 30 days or less can continue under the visa exemption, while longer stays will require travellers to look at the relevant visa or extension requirements.
For many South Africans heading to Thailand for a beach holiday, island getaway or first-time trip to Bangkok, the new rule should not change much. But for those who like to take their time exploring the country, the countdown to 30 days is now on.
