The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has chosen “Navigating the Future: Safety First!” as the theme for its 2024 World Maritime Event. This theme was endorsed by the IMO Council during its 129th session, which took place from 17 to 21 July. Proposed by IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim, the theme emphasizes the importance of maritime safety in the context of emerging technologies and alternative fuels.
The 2024 World Maritime Theme highlights the IMO’s commitment to enhance maritime safety and security while protecting the marine environment. It also acknowledges the need for regulatory development to keep pace with technological advancements and innovations.
Secretary-General Kitack Lim expressed that the theme will address safety regulatory implications arising from new technologies and alternative fuels, including measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from ships. The aim is to ensure the continued smooth and efficient flow of seaborne international trade while maintaining and improving shipping safety and efficiency.
Safety has been a core focus of the IMO since its establishment in 1948. The regulatory framework continually evolves to anticipate emerging technologies and accommodate necessary changes. An example of this proactive approach is the ongoing development of a goal-based Code for maritime autonomous surface ships (MASS Code).
In 2024, the world will commemorate fifty years since the adoption of the 1974 SOLAS Convention, a vital IMO treaty regulating maritime safety. The shipping industry is witnessing significant transformations through digitalization and automation, leading to enhanced safety, security, and efficiency, as well as reduced environmental impact and increased sustainability.
The shipping industry’s advantages lie in its capability to transport about 90% of global trade while being the least environmentally damaging mode of transport. Improved ship safety and reduced greenhouse gas emissions are interconnected and crucial for achieving a sustainable and efficient maritime sector.
The theme “Navigating the Future: Safety First!” aligns with the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and various Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These goals encompass ensuring access to clean energy research and technology (SDG 7), promoting sustainable economic growth and decent work (SDG 8), building resilient infrastructure and fostering innovation (SDG 9), combating climate change and its impacts (SDG 13), and conserving marine resources for sustainable development (SDG 14).
In conclusion, the 2024 World Maritime Theme embodies the IMO’s dedication to promoting safety and sustainability in the maritime industry while aligning with broader global goals for a better future.
