Mahindra South Africa has marked a major milestone with the launch of its new, purpose-built vehicle assembly facility at the Dube TradePort Special Economic Zone in KwaZulu-Natal. The move signals a significant expansion of the brand’s local operations as it enters its third decade in the country.
Built from the ground up near Mahindra’s original 2018 assembly site, the plant meets the company’s global manufacturing standards and boasts advanced quality control systems, expanded production lines, and dedicated customisation zones tailored to South African customers.
“Our original facility was key to establishing our presence here,” said Rajesh Gupta, CEO of Mahindra South Africa. “With rising demand for our locally assembled Pik Up range, we needed a plant with the scale, flexibility, and technology to meet future growth while maintaining world-class quality.”
The Durban facility can roll out over 1,000 Pik Up single- and double-cab models each month, with capacity to expand as demand grows. It is also future-ready, designed to accommodate upcoming models and incorporate a higher percentage of locally sourced components. Mahindra’s global engineering teams are already collaborating with South African suppliers to boost localisation, supporting the nation’s industrial development.
Earlier this year, Mahindra teamed up with the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) to explore the feasibility of a full-scale manufacturing plant in South Africa. Insights from the new facility will guide that study.
“This investment reflects our confidence in South Africa as both a manufacturing hub and a key growth market,” Gupta added. “It reinforces our commitment to job creation, local industry support, and delivering robust, reliable vehicles that meet the needs of South African customers.”
Sustained Growth Momentum
Since producing its first locally assembled bakkie in 2018, Mahindra has become one of South Africa’s top 10 best-selling brands. According to Naamsa, the industry’s business council, the company is among the three fastest-growing brands since opening its first plant and was the fastest-growing brand overall in the 2024/25 financial year.
The momentum has continued into 2025, with Mahindra leading year-to-date growth in the market.
Partnership Driving Local Manufacturing
Dr Dempsey Naidoo, chairman of AIH Logistics — Mahindra’s local assembly partner — said the collaboration since 2018 has created the largest semi-knockdown automotive facility of its kind in South Africa.
“This is a testament to what’s possible when global expertise meets local capability,” Naidoo said. “It has generated jobs, built skills, and advanced the country’s automotive manufacturing sector.”
