The project, launched by Zero Carbon Charge, also known as CHARGE, introduces charging stations that run entirely on solar energy and battery storage. Unlike many traditional EV charging stations around the world, these sites do not rely on Eskom’s electricity grid. In a country where load shedding and power instability remain daily concerns, that detail alone is attracting attention.
For many South Africans, the idea of owning an electric vehicle has often come with one major concern: where do you charge it, especially when travelling long distances? While EVs have become more visible in cities like Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban, highway travel has remained a challenge because charging infrastructure outside major urban areas has been limited.
That is why the launch of these new stations along one of the country’s busiest transport routes is being seen as a breakthrough moment for the local EV industry.
The first charging station officially opened at the Reitz Interchange in the Free State, while another site was launched near the Tugela corridor in KwaZulu-Natal. Reports indicate that each station can charge up to eight electric vehicles at the same time, helping accommodate growing demand as more EVs enter the market.
The stations were reportedly completed in under five months, showing how quickly alternative energy projects can be developed when there is enough investment and planning behind them.

Although electric vehicles still represent a small portion of total vehicle sales, the market is slowly gaining momentum. As charging infrastructure expands and more affordable EV models enter the market, experts believe adoption could increase steadily over the next few years.
For now, the new solar-powered charging stations on the N3 represent more than just a place to recharge a car battery. They symbolise a growing effort to modernise transport infrastructure while adapting to the country’s unique energy challenges.
