In an effort to make public transport more accessible and affordable, Gautrain has launched a new initiative offering a 50% discount on train fares for eligible passengers. Additionally, parking fees at Gautrain stations have been slashed to just R1 per day.
The initiative, called KlevaMova, is designed to support individuals from lower-income households and specific vulnerable groups. Passengers who may qualify for the fare discount include:
Individuals from households earning R350,000 or less per year
Students under the age of 25
School learners
Pensioners
Recipients of SASSA’s disability grant
According to Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, KlevaMova aligns with the government’s broader efforts to ensure that public transport is affordable and accessible to a wider range of Gauteng residents.
“KlevaMova aims to reduce the financial barriers that prevent many people from accessing safe, reliable, and convenient transport,” Diale-Tlabela stated. “We want to attract a diverse passenger base and improve the commuting experience for all.”
She added that the province’s historical spatial planning has left many residents living far from economic centers, making transport a costly necessity. This is reflected in the Gauteng Household Travel Survey, which found that nearly 60% of households spent more than 10% of their income on public transport in 2019/20, up from 55% in 2014.
Affordable public transport, the MEC noted, plays a critical role in reducing household expenses and improving access to jobs, education, and other opportunities.

The 50% fare discount applies to Gautrain train services only.
It is available as a Weekly, Monthly, or return trip product.
Interested individuals must apply and provide supporting documents.
All applications are subject to a verification and approval process.

Parking Special Also Announced
In addition to fare discounts, Gautrain has reduced parking fees to just R1 per day for all passengers using the train, valid from April 1 to July 31, 2025.
Diale-Tlabela emphasized that these initiatives support the province’s long-term transport strategy. “Our 25-Year Integrated Transport Master Plan positions passenger rail as the core of an efficient and integrated system. Reducing reliance on private vehicles will lead to fewer accidents, less congestion, and a significant decrease in harmful emissions.”
