Motorists across South Africa can expect some relief at the fuel pumps starting Wednesday, 7 May 2025, as the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources has announced a decrease in fuel prices.
The new adjustments are as follows:
Petrol 93 (ULP and LRP): Decreases by 22 cents per litre
Petrol 95 (ULP and LRP): Also decreases by 22 cents per litre
Gauteng: From R21.62 to R21.40 per litre
Coastal regions: From R20.79 to R20.57 per litre
Diesel (0.05% sulphur): Drops by 42 cents per litre
Diesel (0.005% sulphur): Drops by 41 cents per litre
Illuminating paraffin (wholesale): Reduced by 31 cents per litre
Single Maximum National Retail Price for paraffin: Down by 41 cents
LPGas: Increases slightly by 46 cents per kilogram
According to the department, the drop in fuel prices is primarily due to a decrease in the average Brent Crude oil price—from $71.04 to $66.40. Other factors include concerns about a global economic slowdown, an oversupply of oil from non-OPEC countries, and expected production increases from OPEC+ members. While petrol and diesel prices fell in line with international oil trends, the cost of LPGas rose due to increased freight charges.
