Motorists across South Africa are set to enjoy some financial relief as fuel prices decrease starting Wednesday. The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources announced the new adjustments on Tuesday, bringing much-needed respite to consumers.
Here are the latest price changes:
– Petrol 93 (ULP & LRP): Down by 58 cents per litre
– Petrol 95 (ULP & LRP): Down by 72 cents per litre
– Diesel (0.05% sulphur): Down by 83 cents per litre
– Diesel (0.005% sulphur): Down by 85 cents per litre
– Illuminating Paraffin (wholesale): Down by 81 cents per litre
– Single Maximum National Retail Price for Illuminating Paraffin: Reduced by R1.14 per litre
– Maximum LPGas Retail Price: Reduced by 79 cents per litre
For motorists in Gauteng, a litre of 95 petrol will now cost R21.62, compared to the previous price of R22.34. Coastal regions will see the price drop from R21.55 to R20.79 per litre.
The Department cited a decrease in the average Brent Crude oil price from $74.89 to $71.04, influenced by steady supply from non-OPEC countries and a moderate increase in output from OPEC+ producers in April 2025. Lower international petroleum product prices led to a reduction in contributions to the Basic Fuel Prices: petrol by 66.36c/l, diesel by 80.10c/l, and illuminating paraffin by 72.07c/l.
Additionally, the Rand’s appreciation against the US Dollar, from R18.50 to R18.30, contributed to the price cuts. This exchange rate improvement reduced contributions to the Basic Fuel Prices by 11.72c/l for petrol, 12.42c/l for diesel, and 12.24c/l for illuminating paraffin.
The adjustments are expected to provide much-needed relief to South Africans facing rising living costs. The continued stability of oil prices and the Rand’s performance will remain key factors in future price changes.
