Bolt Launches Electric Vehicle Ride Category in South Africa

Ride-hailing platform Bolt has officially launched its electric vehicle (EV) ride category in South Africa, becoming one of the latest transport companies to invest in the country’s growing e-mobility sector.

The new category, which initially launches in Cape Town before expanding to Johannesburg and other cities, allows passengers to specifically request fully electric vehicles through the Bolt app. The rollout is being implemented in partnership with local fleet operator YugoRide, which will provide vehicles, charging support, and fleet management services for drivers joining the platform.

The move represents a significant milestone for South Africa’s ride-hailing industry, which has traditionally relied heavily on petrol-powered vehicles. Bolt says the introduction of EVs aims to lower operational costs for drivers, reduce carbon emissions, and support cleaner urban transport solutions at a time when fuel prices and vehicle running costs remain under pressure.

According to reports, Bolt plans to deploy up to 500 electric vehicles on its South African platform by the end of 2026. The company believes EVs could help drivers improve profitability because electric vehicles generally have lower fuel and maintenance costs compared to conventional internal combustion engine vehicles.

Bolt’s Regional Director for Africa and International Markets, Caroline Wanjihia, described South Africa as one of Bolt’s most important markets globally and said the EV launch demonstrates the company’s long-term confidence in the local transport sector.

She explained that electrification could create a more sustainable mobility ecosystem while simultaneously helping drivers reduce operating expenses. Wanjihia also noted that Bolt sees growing interest from both commuters and drivers in environmentally friendly transport alternatives.

The partnership with YugoRide is expected to play a central role in supporting the rollout. Beyond supplying vehicles, the company is assisting with charging infrastructure, operational readiness, driver onboarding, and fleet support systems required to sustain large-scale EV ride-hailing services.

William Huang of YugoRide said South Africa’s transport market presents major opportunities for electric mobility growth, particularly in urban areas where daily ride-hailing trips can rapidly increase fuel expenses for drivers using traditional vehicles.

The launch also places Bolt in direct competition with rival ride-hailing operator Uber, which introduced its Uber Go Electric category in South Africa during 2025. However, Bolt’s planned fleet expansion could potentially surpass the scale of competing EV ride-hailing services currently operating in the country.

South Africa’s broader EV market has been steadily gaining momentum over the past few years despite infrastructure and affordability challenges. While EV adoption remains relatively low compared to markets in Europe and parts of Asia, interest in electric mobility has increased significantly as manufacturers introduce more hybrid and electric models locally.

Industry analysts say the transport sector is likely to become one of the key drivers of EV adoption in South Africa because ride-hailing vehicles travel substantially higher daily distances than privately owned cars, making fuel savings more impactful for operators.

The rollout also comes amid increasing focus on sustainability targets and emission reductions across the global transport industry. Ride-hailing companies worldwide have been under growing pressure to transition fleets toward cleaner energy alternatives as governments and consumers push for greener transport systems.

For South Africa, the expansion of EV ride-hailing services may also help stimulate investment in charging infrastructure, battery technologies, and vehicle financing models tailored toward commercial operators.

Despite the optimism surrounding electric mobility, challenges remain. South Africa’s electricity supply constraints, uneven charging infrastructure, and the relatively high upfront cost of EVs continue to slow widespread adoption. However, fleet-based operations such as ride-hailing services are increasingly being viewed as practical entry points for scaling EV usage because operators can centralise charging and maintenance systems.

Industry observers believe Bolt’s expansion into electric mobility could encourage other transport and logistics companies to accelerate their own EV strategies. The initiative may also influence consumer perceptions of electric vehicles by increasing public exposure to EV technology through everyday commuting experiences.

As the rollout expands over the coming months, the success of Bolt’s EV category could become an important indicator of whether electric ride-hailing can scale sustainably in South Africa’s urban transport environment.
