TEMPORARY road closures will take place on the R21 between 5am and 6pm at the Flying Saucer interchange and Olifantsfontein Road on August 13.
The temporary closures are primarily aimed at the stringing of conductors over the R21 after the approval from SANRAL to close the freeway between 5am and 6pm.
The Apollo 275 kV transmission line tripped on May 19 after a truck hit one of the towers, causing the line conductor to come down between Nellmapius Drive and Olifantsfontein Road.
Motorists are advised to use the following alternative routes: Botha Avenue, Olifantsfontein N1, N3, Rigel Avenue and Delmas Road.
The Apollo Croydon line is planned to be commissioned on August 16. The construction work began on June 9 after a suitable contractor was identified, inducted and designs finalised.
The Apollo-Croydon 275 kV supplies the Croydon sub station with Croydon-Jupiter 275 kV as a back-up. The substation was rendered unstable with the Apollo-Croydon line out.
The following customers are currently at risk of electricity interruptions in the event of the loss of the remaining Croydon-Jupiter 275 kV line:
- Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality which supplies Kempton Park, Germiston,
- Bedfordview, and Edenvale Central Business Districts (CBDs) and the associated industries and suburbs;
- City Power at Modderfontein including the associated industries and suburbs,
- ACSA (OR Tambo International Airport)
Eskom would like to appeal for restraint, co-operation, collaboration and patience when this line is strengthened for the long term mutual benefit of all road users and stakeholders.
