“Tragedy on the R21: Bus Crash Claims 12 Lives, Leaves 45 Injured”

A tragic bus accident on the R21 near Kempton Park on Tuesday morning, March 11, 2025, claimed the lives of 12 people and left 45 others injured.

Ekurhuleni Emergency Medical Services spokesperson, William Tladi, reported that the bus overturned multiple times before coming to rest on its side.

“Emergency teams assessed the victims on-site and confirmed that 12 people had died at the scene,” Tladi stated.

Councillor Andile Mngwevu, Ekurhuleni’s Member of the Mayoral Committee for Transport, expressed his sorrow: “When we arrived, officials confirmed the tragic loss of 12 lives.”

The accident occurred on the northbound R21 highway near OR Tambo International Airport, causing authorities to close the road for most of the day. As of 1 p.m., rescue teams were still working to recover two bodies trapped in the wreckage.

The City of Ekurhuleni confirmed the incident took place around 6:45 a.m.

“This is an unspeakable tragedy,” Mngwevu added. “Seeing so many lives lost is heartbreaking. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who expected their loved ones to return home today. The City shares in their grief.”

The injured passengers were transported to nearby hospitals, including Tembisa, Edenvale, and Tambo Memorial hospitals.

Investigation Underway

The cause of the accident remains under investigation. Authorities confirmed that the bus was operating within its passenger capacity, dismissing overloading as a factor.

Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor, Nkosindiphile Xhakaza, assured the public that all relevant departments were mobilized to support the victims and their families.

“The bus was city-owned, in good working condition, and on its regular route,” Xhakaza said. “We are committed to uncovering what went wrong and ensuring accountability. If any failures are found, they will be addressed.”

Forensic Pathology Services vehicles were present, and the deceased were transported to Germiston Mortuary.

“We are awaiting a full report and video footage to determine how the bus overturned,” Mngwevu added.

This tragic incident comes just a day after another accident in Ekurhuleni claimed the lives of four primary school children, further deepening the community’s sorrow.
