The accident occurred during afternoon peak on Tuesday.
Authorities are investigating after 10 people were injured when a diesel tanker and a train collided at the Muldersvlei level crossing.
The truck was attempting to cross the railway line when the incident occurred, Western Cape traffic department spokesperson Daniel Meyer told News24.
He said the truck was not carrying any diesel at the time of the incident and, therefore, posed no combustion risk.
One train carriage was derailed. Delays of up to 60 minutes should be expected on the Wellington line due to the incident, Metrorail tweeted.
Officials were forced to shut down the entire railway line.
Metrorail’s Riana Scott says the crash is under investigation.
“We confirm a collision between a train and tanker at the Muldersvlei level crossing. A motor coach derailed. The first reports from the scene indicated 10 injuries. It’s understood the train driver was injured as well.”
The extent of injuries incurred by passengers was still unclear.
Local authorities were deployed to the scene for further investigation….
