Fuel Price Hike Kicks In from 2 July — Diesel Sees Biggest Jump

The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR) has confirmed that fuel price increases across petrol, diesel, and illuminating paraffin take effect from today, 2 July 2025.

However, there’s a bit of relief for some consumers — the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) drops in most provinces, with the exception of the Western Cape, where it goes up.

New Fuel Prices (per litre/kilogram):

Petrol 93 (ULP & LRP): +55c
Petrol 95 (ULP & LRP): +52c
Diesel 0.05% sulphur: +82c
Diesel 0.005% sulphur: +84c
Illuminating paraffin (wholesale): +67c
Retail paraffin: +89c
LPG: –57c (nationwide), +R1.90/kg (Western Cape)

The DMPR attributes these hikes mainly to a global surge in Brent Crude oil prices, which rose from \$63.95 to \$69.36 over the review period. Geopolitical instability in the Middle East, particularly tensions between Israel and Iran, has raised concerns over crude oil supply, pushing up international petroleum product prices.

These global factors contributed to the following increases in the Basic Fuel Price:

Petrol: +68.45c/l
Diesel: +100.48c/l
Paraffin: +83.20c/l

Meanwhile, prices for propane and butane saw a slight decline.

In the Western Cape, a temporary measure has led to higher LPG prices. The DMPR has approved a 14% increase in the Supply Cost Recovery on the Maximum Refinery Gate Price (MRGP) for LPG imported via the Port of Saldanha Bay.

As a result:

Western Cape MRGP: R15.22 per metric ton (845.018 c/l, excl. VAT)
Western Cape LPG retail price: R36.08/kg
Effective period: 2 July – 5 August 2025

This interim measure will remain in place for 24 months, the department said.
