Engen Leads Road Transport Safety with Industry-First RTMS Certification

Engen Petroleum has set a new benchmark in road transport safety by becoming the first and only oil company in South Africa to secure the Road Transport Management System (RTMS) certification for its entire national fleet of heavy vehicles.

Industry Recognition for Safety Excellence

The prestigious RTMS certification was awarded by JC Auditors at a handover ceremony on 22 January 2025, held at Engen’s KwaZulu-Natal Regional Office. Bonnie Moyo, national transport and logistics manager, was acknowledged as a driving force behind Engen’s commitment to achieving this milestone.

Commitment to Safety and Operational Best Practices

With nearly two decades of RTMS auditing expertise, JC Auditors conducted extensive evaluations across Engen’s regional depots, ensuring adherence to stringent safety, operational, and risk management standards.

Oliver Naidoo, managing director of JC Auditors, emphasized the significance of this achievement, stating, “Engen’s RTMS certification marks a major advancement in the transport of hazardous goods. By attaining full-fleet certification, Engen has demonstrated outstanding leadership in road safety and fleet management best practices.”

The Value of RTMS Certification

RTMS is a voluntary self-regulation standard endorsed by the Department of Transport and key industry stakeholders. It focuses on improving road safety, vehicle maintenance, driver wellness, and load management. Over the years, South African transport operators have benefited significantly from RTMS certification, experiencing:

– Reduced accidents and transport-related incidents
– Enhanced payload optimization
– Improved vehicle utilization, leading to fewer mechanical failures
– Decreased high-risk driving behaviors, such as excessive speeding and harsh braking
– Minimized driver fatigue through structured monitoring and intervention
– Proactive vehicle maintenance, leading to a notable decline in road crashes

As part of the certification process, JC Auditors applied key South African National Standards (SANS), including SANS 10231, which provides essential guidelines for the safe transport of hazardous goods by road.

By securing RTMS certification across its national fleet, Engen is setting a high standard for safety and operational excellence in the industry, reinforcing its commitment to safer roads and sustainable transport practices.
