Cape Town Opens First Drive-Through Licence Renewal Centre

Motorists in Cape Town now have a quicker and more convenient way to renew their vehicle licence discs, thanks to the launch of the city’s first drive-through licence renewal facility.

Opened on 10 September 2025, the new centre is located in Brackenfell at the corner of Reservoir and Kruispad Roads. Residents can complete the entire renewal process without leaving their cars, with transactions taking an average of just five minutes.

The facility operates from Monday to Friday between 11:00 and 19:30, and on Saturdays from 11:00 to 14:30. City officials are also considering longer weekday operating hours, with updates to be announced once confirmed.

For efficiency and safety, the Brackenfell drive-through is completely cashless, accepting only debit and credit card payments. Motorists who have received their renewal notifications via SMS can simply present the message at the window to finalise the process.

“This initiative makes everyday life easier for our residents,” said Councillor Siseko Mbandezi, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Finance. “With this first-of-its-kind service in Cape Town, drivers can renew their discs in minutes and be back on the road without hassle.”

The city intends to roll out more drive-through renewal centres across Cape Town in the coming months. This innovation builds on earlier digital improvements such as the online booking system, which lets residents schedule appointments for services like licence renewals, municipal account payments, and general queries.

By introducing the drive-through model, the City of Cape Town is modernising service delivery and providing residents with time-saving, customer-friendly solutions. Motorists are encouraged to take advantage of the Brackenfell facility and enjoy the ease of renewing their vehicle licence discs without stepping out of their vehicles.
