BYD Expands South African Line-Up with Three New Model

Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD has expanded its presence in South Africa with the launch of three new models: the Shark 6, Sealion 6, and Sealion 7. As the world’s leading EV manufacturer and Tesla’s top global competitor, BYD continues to strengthen its footprint in international markets.

With the debut of the Shark 6, BYD has disrupted the local double-cab segment—surpassing the Ford Ranger to claim the title of the fastest double-cab bakkie in South Africa. This plug-in hybrid vehicle combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with dual electric motors, producing an impressive 321kW of power and 650Nm of torque. It delivers a combined range of 670km (WLTP) and can run 85km on electric power alone.

Designed with families in mind, the Sealion 6 enters the market as a versatile SUV, while the Sealion 7 brings a sportier, coupe-inspired design. The Sealion 7 is BYD’s fourth fully electric model in the country and features one of the fastest mass-produced electric motors in the world, capable of reaching 23,000rpm. It is powered by BYD’s Blade battery and offers an 82.56kWh capacity, providing a maximum range of 482km under WLTP standards.

“We are thrilled to introduce the BYD Shark, Sealion 6, and Sealion 7 to South Africa,” said Steve Chang, Managing Director of BYD Auto SA. “These vehicles showcase our commitment to innovation, sustainability, and delivering high-performance solutions to South African consumers.”

BYD now offers a total of six models in South Africa. The Atto 3 was the brand’s initial launch in 2023, followed by the Dolphin hatchback and the sporty Seal sedan. The latest additions round out BYD’s dual strategy of offering both plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and fully electric (EV) vehicles to local drivers.
