Volkswagen Golf 7 R production for South Africa has NOT ended…

Various reports out of the United States have suggested Volkswagen has ended production of the Golf 7 R. However, the local arm of the Wolfsburg-based firm has confirmed to CARmag.co.za production for South Africa will continue for a while still.

VW SA told us “there is currently no plan to stop production of the Golf R for South Africa prior to the end of production of Golf 7”.

So, when exactly will manufacture of the seventh-generation hatchback end? Well, while the German brand’s local arm could not share exact dates, it did confirm “the Golf 7 range will be available well into next year [2020]”.

Of course, VW will soon officially reveal the long-awaited Golf 8, although the GTI- and R-badged flagship variants are expected to be unveiled only in 2020, with initial market launches likely the following year.

In February 2019, the SA-spec Golf R was upgraded to the full 228 kW (from 213 kW) offered in many other markets after Volkswagen in Germany officially reclassified South Africa’s climate from “hot” to “moderate”.

The all-paw Golf R tops VW’s seven-strong local Golf range, priced at R681 000 and sprinting from standstill to 100 km/h in a claimed 4,6 seconds….
